The Austin Music Awards are presented each year once the votes from the Austin Chronicle's annual readers' poll are tallied. The readers' poll first began in the early 1980s and now includes more than 40 different categories.

Co-sponsored by 93.3 KGSR-FM and SXSW , the awards show, which also features an evening of live performances by many of the nominees, has typically functioned as the unofficial kick off to SXSW . Since 2010, however, the AMA has taken place on the final (Saturday) night of SXSW and function instead as the culmination of the festival. 2012 schedule information is pending . . .
