What is an orthodontist/what are the benefits of orthodontics?
An orthodontist specializes in preventing and correcting irregularities of the teeth and the bite. There are two benefits of this discipline - the cosmetic aspect and the dental health aspect. By straightening teeth and correcting bite issues, not only does the patient experience improved aesthetics, he or she might also eliminate future jaw, gum, or even tooth decay issues related to the original irregularity.

Although certain behavior like excessive thumb sucking can play a role, for the most part these problems are primarily genetic.

What treatment options are available?
Metal braces are still available but have waned in popularity since anyone who ever had to wear them (for five years like I did) knows they're ugly as hell. Fortunately, there are now ceramic and even clear-colored options.

How long does treatment last?
Each case will differ, but the typical treatment plan lasts anywhere from 18 months to 3 years.

Can adults benefit from orthodontics?
Of course. In fact, it's been estimated that currently up to one-third of all patients are adults.
