Austin Weather History

This page is an informal Austin Weather History resource. It's for relevant and interesting and information related to Austin Texas Weather that doesn't seem to fit anywhere else.

Hottest Summers in Austin - 2009 vs 1925

The hottest summer on record in Austin, in terms of most days at or above 100 degrees Farenheit, occurred back in 1925. There were 69 such days.

During the summer of 2009, we came very close to matching the 1925 record. There were 68 days with the triple digit temperatures.

For some additional perspective, check out this Austin American-Statesman article on the Austin summer of 1925.

The Seasons of Austin - My Interpretation

When I first moved to Austin in March 1997 from Montana, the temperature contrast was . . . rather noticeable.

OK - I thought I was going to die.

Two days before I left, the low was just a degree or two above zero (Farenheit). When I got down to Austin, it was already in the mid 80s, and I couldn't figure out how to properly work the A/C in my new apartment until the third day.

That first summer in Austin was definitely memorable. What I remember most is people laughing at my complaints and telling me how mild that summer was. "We still haven't broken 100 degrees yet," was a common, if not quite comforting, refrain.

I've acclimated quite nicely to Austin weather since then. There's little doubt I'd freeze my ass off now if I ever returned for a Montana winter. But for the first two or three years in Austin, I swear the seasons of Austin pretty much seemed to be broken down like this:

Spring: February 1 - February 28
Summer: March 1 - October 31
Fall: November 1 - November 30
Winter: December 1 - January 31
