The Austin Economy - Overview
A big reason why there seems to be more jobs in Austin, relatively speaking, than elsewhere is due to Austin's diversified economy. Austin is fortunate to have quite a few large employers across various industries and sectors.
- Government - As the capital city of the third most populous state in the union, state government jobs in Austin abound. There are also ample opportunities with Travis County and the City of Austin as well as with neighboring municipalities such as Round Rock and Pflugerville.
- Education - With more than 50,000 total enrollment and approximately 16,500 faculty and staff, the University of Texas at Austin is larger than some respectable small cities. Austin boasts numerous other higher education campuses as well - St. Edwards University, Huston-Tillotson University, Concordia University, Austin Community College, and even a couple of seminaries - the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the Episcopalian-affiliated Seminary of the Southwest.
Additionally, with more than a million and a half residents in the Austin metro area, the Austin Independent School District (AISD) and other ISDs in neighboring municipalities are large employers of teachers and administrators.
- High Tech - Austin is a high tech hotspot. According to the City of Austin, there are more than 3000 high tech companies in the Austin area employing more than 100,000 people.
