Bastille Day is a national French holiday that commemorates the storming of the Bastille (medieval prison in Paris) on July 14, 1789, an early development in the French Revolution. The event draws somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 attendees. Proceeds from the celebration benefit Alliance Française d'Austin, an Austin nonprofit which provides resources for learning French as well as fostering cultural and artistic exchanges between the U.S. and French-speaking countries. The French Legation Museum in Austin was constructed in 1841 to serve as the offices and home of French diplomat, Jean Pierre Isador Alphonse Dubois de Saligny.
