Cap 2K Swim
May 2, 2010
Lady Bird Lake
Registration: $79 - $110
One of the most popular swimming events of the year, Austin's Cap 2K is a 2000 meter open water race and pledge swim that takes place each May in the waters of Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake).
Lady Bird Lake is not really a lake, of course. It's just part of the Lower Colorado River that stretches through the heart of Austin. And swimming is prohibited in the lake with the exception of special events like this one.
The race includes four different divisions: Youth (12-14), High School (15-17), Masters (18+), and Wetsuit. (Age determination is based on swimmer's age on the day of the race).
Registration ranges from $79 (early registration, by 4/13/2010) all the way to $110 (Race Day, assuming slots are still available). See site for online registration. Additionally, all race participants must be members of the American Swimming Association (ASA).
There is no qualifying swimming requirement to participant in the race, but as the Cap 2K site states: The Cap 2K is not the time to test your open water swimming skills. Organizers recommend that you be able to complete a mile within 45 minutes, and there will be a 75 minute time limit on the event.
Additionally, swimming aids such as snorkels and fins are also prohibited (which I find rather amusing - it makes me picture Kramer from Seinfeld showing up to the race).
Also, LCRA turns off the dam during the race to lessen the river/lake's currents.
Other Important Information
Following the race, there will be a picnic at Deep Eddy/Eiler's Park (free meal from local vendors/restaurants for all registered swimmers - along with free official Cap 2K t-shirt and other items). There will also be live music and an awards ceremony.
- The Radisson Hotel in downtown Austin is offering 2010 race partipants a special $109 room rate (use special discount code: "cap2k"). But you might also double check to see if you can get a better deal on the Radisson through Hotels Combined which automatically searches and compares all major hotel and travel sites to find the very best rates.
- The Cap 2K Swim has benefited a variety of organizations and causes over the years. For 2010, proceeds from the race go toward Swimability, a nonprofit that provides swimming lessons to underprivileged kids in the area.
