Celebrate Texas Independence Day - Texas State Cemetery - Austin Texas
Celebrate Texas is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to “encourage and promote the education of the general public regarding Texas Independence Day and the history of Texas and its people.”

The organization was the idea of the late Jay L. Johnson, an influential Austin politician and civic leader, who passed away in 2001.

Texas Independence Day, an official state holiday, commemorates the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. The Texas War for Independence against Mexico lasted from the fall of 1835 through the spring of 1836. Texas existed as an independent republic from 1836 until 1845 when Texans agreed to join the United States.

The organization supports a number of different Austin-specific events to commemorate Texas Independence Day:
  • March 2, 2011 (Texas Independence Day) – Annual Memorial Service for Veterans of the Texas Revolution at the Texas State Cemetery. There will be re-enactors from the period and there’s usually a brief tour of the Texas State Cemetery (see link for cemetery review, photos, and map) following the service. The service begins at 9:00am.

  • March 5, 2011 – Texas Independence Day 5K Run (“The Texas 5”) and the Texas Independence Day Parade. Both Saturday events begin at the Congress Avenue Bridge. The 5K Run begins at 8:00am and staging for the parade begins at 8:30am with the actual parade scheduled for 9:30am.

  • March 6, 2011 – Alamo Defenders Remembrance Ceremony takes place on the south grounds of the Texas State Capitol (near the “Heroes of the Alamo” monument). The service includes reading aloud those who perished at the Alamo as well as muskets fired in their honor.

  • March 7, 2011 – Celebrate Texas Celebrity Golf Tournament. The tournament is hosted at the Falconhead Golf Club. Proceeds from the event go towards supporting the Celebrate Texas organization.
