Celebrate Texas Independence Day - Texas State Cemetery - Austin Texas

Celebrate Texas is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to "encourage and promote the education of the general public regarding Texas Independence Day and the history of Texas and its people."

The organization was the idea of the late Jay L. Johnson, an influential Austin politician and civic leader, who passed away in 2001.

Texas Independence Day, an official state holiday, commemorates the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. The Texas War for Independence against Mexico lasted from the fall of 1835 through the spring of 1836. Texas existed as an independent republic from 1836 until 1845 when Texans agreed to join the United States.
