Owners Mike Young and John Zapp opened the flagship location on Barton Springs RD in 1982, and it quickly grew into an Austin landmark, representative of and a contributing factor toward the city's laid back and quirky reputation.

The menu is Tex-Mex, with perhaps more of an emphasis on the Tex than the Mex. The food isn't my personal favorite, but the restaurant has a loyal following and it's another one of those places Austinites love to take their out of town visitors.

Prepare for a crowd and a wait, especially at the original Barton Springs location. But if you have to wait for a table, what better place to wait than here? Be sure to check out (responsibly) the daily (week days) happy hour(s) from 4:00pm-7:00pm. The restaurant also sells a line of popular t-shirts.

Co-owner Mike Young and local radio station KLBJ co-founded the annual Children Giving to Children Parade and toy drive back in 1989. The parade is held each November and benefits Operation Blue Santa.
