Austin, Texas has been celebrating Eeyore's birthday (Winnie the Pooh's perpetually depressed donkey friend) each year since 1963. According to legend, the original gathering was a spring picnic and party at Eastwoods Park organized by UT students and/or faculty in the English Department.
The celebration eventually took on a life of its own, developing into a major annual hippie gathering and relocating to its current location at Pease Park.
Eeyore's party is still known for its hippie flavor, although there are now events geared more toward family-friendly activities (sack races, egg tosses, face painting, temporary tattoos, costume contests, etc.)
The drum circles are pretty cool and one of the elements for which the festival is well known. Other elements include a hybrid Eeyore-Statue of Liberty, a Maypole, and lots of fun and freaky attire and costumes.
Featured 2010 live music acts include:
Graham Wilkinson and the Underground Township
Accoustic musicians are also welcome to bring their own instruments to the festival.
