UPDATE: 2010 Event Cancelled
UPDATE: First Night scheduled for December 31, 2010 has been cancelled due to budget constraints by the city of Austin. The information that follows provides an overview of the event. This page will remain active and will be updated with future years' First Night information when that becomes available.
In spite of the no alcohol rule, this is still one of the coolest city-sponsored festivals of the year. Now in its fifth year, First Night (2009) celebrates the coming New Year from a creative and artistic perspective.
Billed as "a free, inter-generationally programmed, family-friendly and alcohol-free public celebration, showcasing the unique culture of Austin through expressive, creative traditions of performing and visual arts," the festival is spread out across nearly a dozen different venues around town and provides a sober alternative for those wanting to ring in the New Year with more art and less public intoxication.
Attractions include a huge variety of visual arts, music, and performance art. There are both outdoor and indoor events, a parade, a whole lot of walking, and a finale of fireworks along Auditorium Shores.
Unless you possess a functioning time machine or multi-locality, be sure to consult the festival's program to plan your evening. Until First Night returns, you can consult an online program from a couple years ago as a sample.
