Houston's Restaurant in Austin

Affiliated with the Hillstone Restaurant Group, Houston's Restaurant in Austin is one of thirty or so Houston's across the United States. Found mostly in the West, but with locations in Atlanta, New York, Boston, and Washington D.C., Houston's offers an eclectic American menu in an upscale but warm and friendly environment. Houston's in Austin opened in 1986 and is independently owned and operated.

Although not strictly a steakhouse, I much prefer eating a choice steak here to eating one at its counterpart, Cool River Café.

There's a full bar, of course, and an extensive wine selection.

Menu Highlights:

• The Spinach Dip appetizer consistently gets rave reviews
• Excellent steaks and prime rib
• Great burgers
• A French Dip sandwich made from thin strips of prime rib
• The Veggie Burger also gets good reviews

As you would expect with $30 entrées and $13 burgers, the service is excellent and attentive. And I love the atmosphere and decor. Houston's in Austin has done a terrific job of combining upscale with relaxed. It's class without the pretension.

One word of warning: be sure to exit through the entrance. That lovely door on the back side of the bar? That's a fire escape that sets off an alarm when opened.
