Jalisco's Austin Review
Jalisco's Restaurant and Bar in South Austin is conveniently located on South Congress just north of William Cannon.
It offers solid Tex-Mex choices, breakfast until noon, and a good selection of steak and seafood, and all for very reasonable prices.
With its clean, warm decor and very open dining room, don't expect a lot of privacy. This is more Three Amigos! than A Fistful of Dollars.
It's also unrelated to the old Jalisco's that used to be over in the Barton Springs RD and Riverside DR area across the way from Threadgills and right next door to Hooter's. That place was definitely more Clint Eastwood than Steve Martin. That restaurant, which was completely razed, with its cool, dilapidated hacienda feel, was always one of my favorites.
The other drawback is the accoustics, which are similar to those in the dome area of Baby A's along north I-35 near Pflugerville. With the tiled floors, expansive ceiling, and stucco walls, there's just nothing for sound to do but to keep echoing and echoing. Even a half full dining room can translate into a very loud meal.
But it does have a lot going for it - decent food, good prices, a full bar, and a clean and inviting environment. And there's also a Mariachi band on Thursday nights.
