KVRX is UT Austin's student run station and is one of the cooler Austin radio stations.
As with all student run radio, there's a wide mix of programming, but that's especially the case here. The station places a big emphasis on new musio, on independent music, on local music, and on an extensive variety of musical genres played.
Admittedly, some broadcasts are more polished than others, but I do find it enjoyable and redemptive listening to younger people honing their craft and engaging the Austin community. Austin is a richer place because of it. If not always of the highest professional quality, it is at least fresh.
The station also shares radio frequency (91.7 fm) with KOOP Austin. KVRX broadcasts on 91.7 7pm-9am during the week and from 10pm-9am on weekends. But the station does broadcast 24 hours via online streaming radio.
Programming and Station Highlights
Like its sister station, KOOP, it's impossible to generalize or sum up the KVRX listening experience.
But here are two highlights:
- Blues at Sunrise - not only one of my favorite shows on this station, Blues at Sunrise, hosted by DJ Smokehouse Brown, is one of my favorite shows on all of Austin radio. Now broadcast on Tuesday mornings from 7am-9am, there are few better ways to start your day than with a first class blues radio show, hosted by a knowledgeable and gifted DJ. Occasionally, there are also live interviews or guests which never disappoint. You can also check out Smokehouse Brown's Blues at Sunrise blog.
- Local Live - Tune in each Sunday night at 10 pm for an hour of live local music broadcast from the UT campus - another good source for live music in Austin. For a listing of recent (and current?) shows, check out the Local Live page.
