Family owned and operated since 1952, Matt’s El Rancho is one of Austin’s oldest restaurants. It’s also one of its most popular.

The best word that describes Matts El Rancho is tasteful. More traditional than laid back in that Austin sort of way, youll find no quirky tackiness in the décor or self-effacing irony in the menu.
What you will find is good food, reasonably priced, served piping hot by an efficient and experienced staff (and these are some of the best tortillas in Austin, by the way).
Matt Martinez and his wife Janie opened the restaurant in 1952. The original location was a much smaller establishment (10 tables) on E. First Street. In 1986 they moved to the current S. Lamar location.
Matt Martinez was a former boxer (a Texas Golden Gloves Champion in 1937 with an incredible 139-5 amateur and pro combined record) and runner (he won a half marathon in 1942 in Kodiak, Alaska).
Matt's El Rancho really is a nice change of pace if you ever get burned out on all those laid back Tex-Mex establishments. That's not to say that Matt's El Rancho is uptight or formal, but theres almost a San Antonio feel to the place. They pride themselves on the quality of their food and their efficient professionalism.
And I love the entrance to the restaurant itself - it definitely conveys a certain regal funeral home air:
