Max's Ride is a biking and fundraising event held each year in memory of Max Harrison, a Desert Storm veteran who passed away in 2006 from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease). Proceeds go toward ALS research and patient services via the ALS Association - South Texas Chapter.
The ride and opening ceremonies begin in South Austin at Cowboy Harley-Davidson (see map below). The Ride follows a route through the Texas Hill Country and ends back in Austin at the legendary Scholz Garten around noon for a benefit concert. The 2012 family friendly concert features Natural Causes .
Registration includes admission to the concert, but if you're not a biker, tickets for just the concert at Scholz Garten are also available. That way you can still participate in the event and enjoy an afternoon of great Austin live music.
The disproportionate rates of neurological illnesses that Desert Storm vets have suffered is well documented. By all accounts, Max Harrison was a tremendously generous and positive individual. What a great event this is then as it honors his memory and legacy as well as providing tangible resources in the fight against this heartbreaking disease.
