Benefiting Texas Hearing and Service Dogs , the Mighty Texas Dog Walk in Austin is competing for the Guiness World Record Title of "Largest Dog Walk."
( Texas Hearing and Service Dogs was the Real Austin Texas featured nonprofit for April 2010 .)
The current record is 22,742 dogs (and 182 breeds) and is held by The Great North Dog Walk in The Leas, South Shields, England.
The Austin event, which first began in 1999, held the record in 1999 and 2002 , (the official 2010 MTDW count was 11,256 dogs) but GNDW is a dog walking juggernaut and most likely won't be overtaken unless we dress up our cats as dogs and start bringing them to the event.
They've been reigning champions every year since 2003. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they have no registration fee associated with their event.
Seriously - why do they even have that many dogs? They sound like animal hoarders . . .
And do we really need 23,000 dogs at Auditorium Shores? Besides, there are other cooler records The Mighty Texas Dog Walk is shooting for in 2012: Biggest Hair Ball (?!?!), Most Dogs Wearing the Same Bandana , and Most Dogs Sitting at Once .
Beginning last year, the Mighty Texas Dog Walk became a full day festival complete with vendor booths and live music (see lineup below). The Brits may hold the record for mangy curs, but at least our urbane dogs know how to party.

2012 Mighty Texas Dog Walk Registration and Logistics
You can register early online, by mail, or in person on March 30, 2011 thru April 1, 2011 (Wed - Fri) at one of two Petco locations (Great Hill Trails - North & Brodie Lane - South).
Early registration saves you $5 and gets you your registration materials early (which includes the always cool official Mighty Texas Dog Walk t-shirt - this year designed by Mauro Garza) .
You can also register and pick up your packet on the day of the Walk, but plan to come early.
And bring a baggy.
Mighty Texas Dog Walk - 2012 Event and Live Music Schedule
You can check out the 2012 Mighty Texas Dog Walk Official Schedule here - highlights included three world record attempts: Biggest Hair Ball (that should help my allergies), Most Dogs Wearing the Same Bandana, and Most Dogs Sitting (and no, that's not a typo).
In addition, there will also be various dog activities and entertainment, including the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge, a Doggie Cake Walk, and an ongoing Agility/Open Play area.
And Austin's own Nakia will be the Celebrity Grand Marshall of the event.
2012 Mighty Texas Dog Walk Map and Course
The Austin course is a 3 mile route that begins and ends at Auditorium Shores (new location). The festival officially opens at 7:00 am with the Walk beginning at 9:00 am.
