The Moonlight Margarita Run combines two popular Austin activities--drinking margaritas and a 5K race. The secret to the event's success is the order of the activities. First the race, then the margaritas.
The event's primary sponsor is Maudie's Tex-Mex restaurants, and the evening is a gala fundraising event that benefits The Trail Foundation, whose "mission is to protect and enhance the Trail at Lady Bird Lake."
The foundation works closely with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and supports training runs throughout the year.
(A very cool resource provided by The Trail Foundation, by the way, is an interactive map of Austin's famous hike and bike trail system - hint: change the default setting from "Satellite" to "Map" and scroll in.)
The 2010 Moonlight Margarita Run begins at 8:00 pm at the Johnson Creek Trailhead (aka "The Rock"). The Johnson Creek Trailhead renovation is an upcoming Foundation project.
Per TTF, approximately one-third of trail users enter the trail via the Johnson Creek Trailhead.
The 5K ends on Veterans Drive near the American Legion Hall where the after party (along with the margaritas and live music) takes place.
