No Pants Day Austin
May 6, 2011 (1st Friday in May)
Austin, Texas
No Pants Day is not exactly a global phenomenon, but it's not exclusive to Austin, either.
The premise is simple: on the first Friday in May, you're encouraged to go about your day without wearing pants. The idea is that the more people running around in their underwear, the more fun and joy there will be in the world for at least one day.
Allegedly, No Pants Day has been celebrated in Austin since 1997 (the year I arrived - hmmm . . . coincidence?). In all honesty, however, the holiday seems to be more honored in University of Texas circles than in Austin at large.
In the time, I've been here, I can't recall anyone showing up in their underwear at the various places of employment where I've been on the first Friday of May. In fact, it seems that the prudent move here is to allow a co-worker to be the first to celebrate the holiday in your office.
The event takes place in other cities as well. And No Pants Day has a more famous cousin - The No Pants Subway Ride promoted each January in New York.
