The STFR claims roots going back to 1938 with the Travis County Baby Beef Show held downtown and boasting all of 16 animals. In 2009, the total event attendance was 300,000, including total Rodeo attendance of 66,000. There are also numerous concerts in the fairgrounds/carnival area. The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo is also a major contributor toward college scholarships with more than $350,000 awarded in 2009 alone. Other highlights include BBQ Cook-off, pig races, and crowd favorite, Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey who rides a sheep dog. Additionally, the 2010 Rodeo Austin Gala, a black tie fundraising event featuring silent auction, dinner, drinks, and concert, will be held at the Palmer Events Center on February 6, 2010.
