SXSW is Austin’s premiere festival, an annual event celebrating creativity, innovation, and networking across three disciplines: music, film, and interactive media.
South by Southwest first began in 1987 as a music festival designed to bring together musical artists, managers, record label executives, and, of course, music fans.
From 700 registrants in its first year to more than 12,000 now, it was an immediate success, helping to seal Austin’s live music reputation. Today, the festival showcases 2000 musical acts across 80 separate venues.
In 1994, SXSW expanded to include its now widely acclaimed Film Conference and Festival and Interactive Festival. Austin has a small but thriving film industry and a robust high tech industry (aka “Silicon Hills”).
The festival also features tons of networking and informational components from trade shows to panel discussions to presentations and keynote addresses.
