South by Southwest first began in 1987 as a music festival designed to bring together musical artists, managers, record label executives, and, of course, music fans.

Today, the festival showcases 2000 musical acts across 80 separate venues. In 1994, SXSW expanded to include its now widely acclaimed Film Conference and Festival and Interactive Festival. Austin has a small but thriving film industry and a robust high tech industry (aka “Silicon Hills”). The festival also features tons of networking and informational components from trade shows to panel discussions to presentations and keynote addresses. There are five different categories of badges for public admission: Platinum, Gold, Music, Film, and Interactive.
