The Zilker Summer Musical is one of Austin's great traditions. The program has been entertaining Austin with free outdoor performances of Broadway musicals since 1959 (and for Austin history buffs, the very first production was Seventeen).
As I recall, I saw Guys & Dolls and South Pacific my first two summers in Austin.
The Zilker Theatre Productions are performed at the outdoor Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater (which was renovated in the spring of 2010).
The 2011 performance is Footloose, which includes a Tony-nominated score and a number of musical hits made popular by the film version: Footloose, Let's Hear It for the Boy, Holding Out for a Hero,, and Almost Paradise.
The performances are free, but donations are welcomed at intermission and parking at Zilker Park costs around $3/car.
