The decision is a result of the economic downturn and budgetary issues. The Trail of Lights has been a Zilker Park fixture since 1992, but it burns an incredible wattage of cash each year. There is a Santa's house and post office and, of course, plenty of food vendors and arts and crafts exhibitors. The 2009 Zilker Holiday Tree Lighting still takes place (December 6, 2009) and the tree remains lit through December 31st. The city of Austin will revisit the future of the Trail of Lights in 2010.
